„Since my first film I always like to build plot out of a block of moments, not to have a real continuity. I love ellipses so I was always working this way, and those blocks could be interpreted as fragments of a life but all my films are a little bit fragmentary.“
„A sequence showing Joe plying his trade entirely via surveillance cameras is a gimmick, but it also says something provocative about violence and spectatorship, presenting an unblinking but distanced perspective on carnage that another director might have rendered in close-up.“
„Netflix has created a distribution platform of staggering power, capable of delivering movies to people who’d never get within 1,000 miles of Cannes’ Croisette, but it’s also built a model that thrives on quantity over quality, where it doesn’t matter what people are watching as long as they’re watching something.“
„There was a partial knee replacement. Some more work on his back, bolting various compressed spinal pads together. At one point he needed to have his vocal cords repaired. All told, Fraser says, he was in and out of hospitals for almost seven years.“
„I mean, I’ve never made love to a peach. And most peaches aren’t very big, so I wasn’t quite sure you would do that. I was imagining very big peaches.“
„And as much as everything felt the same this time, as it does every time this happens, I am animated by the hope that this time will be different. I have no other choice.“
„Marx is the person who explained how the dominant ideas in a given society are the ideas of the privileged exploiting class and that the ideas of this privileged class determine the thinking of the whole society. So obvious when you watch any television debate today.“
Netflix v kontextu proměn filmové distribuce: „Thus, as consumers, we’re less concerned with cinema than we are with #content — and less interested in whether it’s any good than if and when it’s there.“
Call Me By Your Name: „But thank goodness Michael Stuhlbarg spells out the entire point to us at the end, and Timothée Chalamet stares at the camera for four minutes.“
A Ghost Story: “You have no idea how many times I fell asleep during whatever the hell that was.”
Tvář vody: „But I’ve seen The Shape of Water twice, and I still don’t really know why Sally Hawkins falls in love with the fish-guy, besides that, yes, he’s pretty sexy as fish-guys go.“
Začíná kauza #metoo připomínat hon na čarodějnice z 50. let? V reakci na článek A. O. Scotta o tom v souvislosti s Woodym Allenem píše Steve Vineberg: „The actors in Allen’s unreleased new movie who have made a big show of donating their salaries to various organizations that support abused women are making sure that, in this cultural climate, they look like they’re on the right side, just as in the 1950s actors who were worried about their careers made sure to distance themselves from anyone who was under investigation by the House Un-American Activities Committee.“
Internet zaplavily žebříčky nejlepších filmů, videoher a seriálů. Filmový rok 2016 zrekapitulovali také kritici The New York Times.
Pověst jednoho z nejlepších filmů roku provází portrét bývalé (a dodnes nejslavnější) první dámy Spojených států Jackie. Zklamáním bylo pro mnohé kritiky naopak hvězdně obsazené válečné (melo)drama Roberta Zemeckise Allied. V omezené české distribuci se na konci listopadu objeví dvouapůlhodinový dokument I Am Bolt.
„Moonlight is at once singular and universal: Chiron’s struggle as a gay man in an environment that treats such yearnings with scorn and violence becomes one of the more high-stakes dramas of the year, utterly specific to its lower-class Miami setting. But at its core, Moonlight takes the concept of the bildungsroman to its natural end point in ways that many coming-of-age stories don’t.“
„The climax is the best sustained sequence to ever appear in a Marvel film, a fight played out against an apocalypse in reverse that literally undoes the glib chaos that tends to end these movies.“
„Here it’s high time to marvel at the candidness allowed by the use of high-definition by Lee and cinematographer John Toll: observing these actors’ faces, even at rest, is like watching the surface of a lake, noticing it ripple with a breeze. Put another way: you see, physiologically, when a character has been crying in this film, for a few seconds after.“
„I never feel like my femininity is threatened by being powerful, or anything someone might say is a male attribute. So I find it so odd when men feel their masculinity is being threatened, I’m like, ‘Really? It shouldn’t be that delicate“
„Today, women continue to be a major part of, and often the majority in, horror movie audiences. In 2013, the hit The Conjuring had an audience composed of 53% women; The Purge had an audience of 56% women. Mama was 61% women. Even the Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake showed to an audience that was less than half men.“
„While The Innocents is Clayton’s masterpiece, or at least his most perfect film, The Pumpkin Eater is his riskiest and perhaps his most characteristic work.“
„As is true for real-life cases and crime-solving methods, a murderer’s psychology and motives cannot be sussed in a matter of one day. The completion of a complex puzzle requires patience and, unfortunately, many have lost the quiet endurance necessary to filter through the many pieces.“
„The common knock against rom-coms—besides their being too often glibly hetero-normative and horrendously lacking in diversity and ironically ambivalent about the women who generally watch them—is that they are fantasies, in the worst way as well as the best.“
