Následuje zpravidla tzv. first-look review, rozvádějící onen tweet do několika odstavců a doplňující synopsi hodnoceného snímku.
O Loveless od Zvjaginceva např. ve Filmmaker Magazine napsali: „“misogynistic, portentous and vapid film about a divorcing Russian couple’s missing 12-year old son“. Shoda v podstatě panuje pouze v tom, že úrovně letošní soutěže nebyla moc valná, slovy Nicka Jamese, „the competition has been the weakest of recent times“.
„That confidence that Cannes is the best film festival in the world because film itself is the best audiovisual medium in the world isn’t as strong as it used to be. TV shows are starting to chip away at the screening slots; two of the buzziest and best-received selections here were Jane Campion’s Top of the Lake season 2 and episodes of David Lynch’s new Twin Peaks.“
120 battements par minute (120 Beats Per Minute, r. Robin Campillo)
„120 Beats Per Minute offers not only compelling social-realist ideas on its surface, but finds visually evocative ways to express them.“ (Sam C. Mac)
„Though the film is way too long, the final, deeply moving sequences are created by performances of such subtlety and conviction that the occasional spurt of didactic overkill is quickly forgiven.“ (Nick James)
Happy End (r. Michael Haneke)
„Happy End‚s various dangling plot threads may be immediately puzzling, but they ultimately form an involving, deceptively empathetic portrait of personal grief as it’s experienced in a desensitized first-world society.“ (Simon Abrams)
„(…)as Happy End slowly unfurls its various subplots, taking its patient time to draw them together, one begins to wonder if Haneke will tell us anything he hasn’t told us before about the rotten values of the upper class.“ (A. A. Dowd)
The Florida Project (r. Sean Baker)
„Laughter and sadness co-mingle until a euphoric finale scene sends the story into the realms of pure candy-coated fantasy.“ (David Jenkins)
Jeune Femme (Montparnasse Bienvenue, r. Léonor Séraille)
„This is fresh, exciting filmmaking and the arrival of a new voice in French cinema.“ (John Bleasdale)
The Killing of a Sacred Deer (r. Yorgos Lanthimos)
„As gorgeously shot and semi-mechanically acted as The Lobster – with Kidman particularly fine – the film is otherwise, sadly, a tedious exercise in morbidity chic.“ (Nick James)
The Meyerowitz Stories: New and Selected (r. Noah Baumbach)
„(…)occasionally brilliant, bittersweet, Baumbachian exploration of familial torment.“ (Michael Leader)
„This isn’t just more of the same from Baumbach, a talented humorist, but a nuanced and highly accomplished collaboration that ranks among his finest to date.“ (Simon Abrams)
„Mistrovské dialogové výměny plné sebereflexe a kulturních referencí, efektivní rozvržení na kapitoly a zatmívačkami oddělenou sérii epilogů, záměrně prudké střihy, nápaditá kinetická kamera Robbieho Ryana (American Honey, Já, Daniel Blake) – to vše jen umocňuje komplexní dojem z díla, které nesmírně vtipně, a přece s trpkou přesností mapuje všednodenní existenciální úzkosti každého z nás.“ (Aleš Stuchlý)
Nelyubov (Loveless, r. Andrej Zvjagincev)
„(…) for the most part Zvyagintsev again gets the balance between credible characterisation of individuals and state-of-the-nation commentary just right.“ (Geoff Andrew)
Oklamaný (The Beguiled, r. Sofia Coppola)
„It is an extraordinary work of cinematic craft that entertains through beauty, humour and mood, all the while building a moving evocation of what it costs to deny your sexual urges.“ (Sophie Monks-Kaufman)
„It is a tremendously watchable movie, a drama-thriller with subtle touches of noir and black comedy.“ (Peter Bradshaw)
Visages, villages (r. JR, Agnès Varda)
„In the hands of anyone else, this portrait of provincial people and an unlikely friendship might have resulted something thin and inconsequential. Instead, it’s a poetic window into the process of creation, an ode to the elevation of the ordinary, and a primer on the way to live.“ (Kelley Conway)
Western (r. Valeska Grisebach)
„Free of affectation and distinguished by a generosity and sincerity exceedingly rare in cinema, Western’s poignant celebration of human resilience is nothing short of spectacular.“ (Giovanni Marchini Camia)
„Autorka filmu Touha (jehož kvality mě na Western navzdory pozdní hodině přilákaly) předvedla další neobyčejně komplexní, skvěle zahrané civilní drama se spoustou drobných dějů (…)“ (Pavel Sladký)
You Were Really Never Here (r. Lynne Ramsay)
„Ramsay has made a terrific short story, economical as hell but also so moment-for-moment gripping that you want to pore over its every shot, its every dark cranny.“ (A. A. Dowd)
„In a Lynne Ramsay film, even the off-key elements are perfectly chosen; an exquisite, anxious study in damage, You Were Never Really Here knows exactly the value of its scars.“ (Guy Lodge)
Divoká karta
Jeannette l’enfance de Jeanne d’Arc (Jeannette, the Childhood of Joan of Arc, r. Bruno Dumont)
„So aberrant and ruthless is its pursuit of new forms of poetry, luminance and madness that it can be (and very much has been) confused for cretinism itself.“ (Filmmaker Magazine)
